Choosing Interior Paint Finishes: Flat, Eggshell, Satin, or Semi-Gloss?

By Bob & Ben Usner · June 16, 2026 · 3 min read

Sheen changes how a room looks, how it cleans, and how forgiving it is. A quick guide for Pittsburgh homeowners.

Flat or matte

Hides wall imperfections best and gives a soft, modern look. A good fit for ceilings and lower-traffic rooms like bedrooms.

Eggshell

A subtle glow with easier cleaning than flat. A popular choice for living rooms, dining rooms, and hallways.

Satin

More durable and wipeable. Well suited to kitchens, bathrooms, kids’ rooms, and busy areas.

Semi-gloss

Tough, easy to clean, and it shows off detail. The usual pick for trim, doors, and cabinets.
